Pharmacists Angela Stokes and James Meadors recount their experiences serving the Oklahoma hospice community during challenging conditions.
During the recent severe storms in Oklahoma, when record amounts of swirling snow and sleet impacted the state, OnePoint Patient Care remained fully operational and serving our hospice Nurses, caregivers and patients.
Despite the dangerous conditions, our colleagues in Oklahoma showed up – going to extraordinary lengths in order to ensure that their patients were provided for.
“It was a group effort,” according to Tulsa Pharmacist Angela Stokes. “It was heartwarming to see everybody come together. We are a tight knit community.”
Snow began to fall heavily on Friday night and by Sunday, according to reports, the Tulsa area received a record 8.7 inches of snow. Naturally, this also led to ice forming on the roads, significantly impacting travel.
At OnePoint, hospice patients and their specialized needs are at the heart of what we do. It’s why direct home delivery is a core component of our services – and even in the midst of these hazardous conditions, our team came through.
Oklahoma City Pharmacist James Meadors recounted that, even on Saturday when the weather was at its worst, he and his colleagues Technicians Jasmine Walker and Krystal Torres made sure orders were filled and even continued to support STAT deliveries throughout the OKC Metro area.
That day, James worked a 12 hour shift – even booking a nearby hotel room, instead of going home, in order to ensure he’d make it back to the pharmacy by 8 o’clock on Saturday morning.
When speaking to Nurses on the phone, said James, “they were very understanding. They’d ask any way you’re running here?” And indeed, despite all the challenges, the Oklahoma City pharmacy still filled prescriptions and managed to successfully deliver 20 STAT orders that day.
Tulsa Pharmacist Angela Stokes shared a similar story. Only instead of booking a hotel, Angie brought a blowup mattress in order to spend the night in the pharmacy, answering on-call orders.
Except the only place she could turn off the lights in order to sleep was the store room, which is of smaller proportions. “The room was too small for the mattress,” shared Angie, laughing. “The sides were climbing up the walls.”
Still, said Angie, “Why ask someone to come in on-call, risk their life? So, I stayed at the pharmacy. ”
Throughout the day, Angie ensured that everyone stayed in close communication – from her amazing colleague Taylor Proberts, a Technician who also came in to work side by side with Angie, to Drivers, Nurses and family members.
There were very few straightforward deliveries. Some, the patient’s family members came and picked up themselves. Some, OnePoint Drivers met Nurses and family members at a local hospital, if they couldn’t make it to the patient’s home. One delivery was even coordinated at the Afton freeway exit.
In the end, said Angie, “I was ready to go home, we all were, but we got people that needed us.”
And ultimately, “We did it,” said Angie. “And everybody stayed safe. I am proud to be a part of such an amazing group.”
Our colleagues in Oklahoma, and across the country, inspire us – their professionalism personifies our Mission to “Provide our patients, their caregivers and family members with the highest quality of care, reliability and support.” Stories like this prove that we mean it when we say we’re here when you need us. Always.
